The Vampire Facial® is a trademarked procedure that rejuvenates and beautifies the skin using the patient’s blood-derived platelets!

Vampire Facial® is a trademarked procedure that was invented by Dr. Charles Runels

The Vampire Facial® is a trademarked procedure that was invented by Dr. Charles Runels.  The treatment is essentially a “combination of micro-needling, followed by the application of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma),” says Dr. Mir Varquez, Medical Director at Belle D’ Mir Med-Spa. The PRP is derived from the serum portion of the blood, which contains the platelets. These platelets contain high levels of growth factors, which, when applied to the skin, will stimulate cell turnover, increase collagen production, and improve circulation.

In laymen’s terms: It’s a micro-needling facial that uses, “your own blood to help promote the healthy activity of your skin cells,” Our blood is comprised of red blood cells and serum, which contain our white blood cells and platelets.

Platelets, Dr. Varquez explains, are rich in growth factors, which essentially act as energy boots for our skin. This helps our skin function optimally, increasing everything from collagen to elastin, while also bringing antioxidant and hydrating properties. “Platelet-rich plasma is now commonly used topically as part of a regular facial, used along with micro-needling to enhance penetration into the skin, and if you opt for the Vampire Facelift® it can even be injected into the skin in the same manner as dermal fillers.

How does it work?

The Vampire Facial® requires a small blood draw to obtain the blood, and contrary to popular belief, it’s pain-free aside from the first needle stick.

Typically, the process includes the initial blood draw, then running the blood through a specialized centrifuge to isolate the platelets from the rest of the blood. You’ll then receive a micro-needling treatment and the face is then slathered with the platelet-rich plasma during the process. The needling makes it possible to allow the PRP to seep into the newly created micro-holes. This can be accompanied with or without radiofrequency, too. The Vivace RF Micro-Needling system is the perfect delivery method for PRP.

As for recovery, it might take 6 hours before you’re ready to hit the streets if you want to wash your face before going out. You’ll emerge from treatment a bit red, almost like a sunburn, which means post-procedure sunscreen is highly recommended. Applying makeup, though, is discouraged for 12 hours if possible. The tiny holes caused by the micro-needles close up within 6 hours, but it is recommended to leave a thin film of PRP on the face for several hours after for best results.

Are you a candidate?

Those patients with “premature wrinkles, sun damage, or anyone who wants an even out their skin tone and have a fresher appearance is an ideal candidate for the procedure. Dr. Mir Varquez will go over your medical history and determine if there is any history of blood diseases, including clotting or bleeding disorders prior to recommending this treatment. There is no negative side effect noted with the Vampire Facial®.

How much does it cost?

The cost is set by the Vampire Procedure Group and runs $1,000 per treatment. Dr. Varquez notes that multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results and that treatments should be performed 4-6 weeks apart in a series of 3 if combined with the Vivace RF Micro-Needling System. The Vivace RF can greatly enhance the results of the Vampire Facial®.
